Our Night Out

     “Open up, Nick!”
“I’m going to the bathroom! Relax one damn minute!”
“You’ve been in there for twenty minutes already!”
Nick and Bethany always fought over the bathroom in the morning. Her needing to do her makeup and him… well… he just stinks it up. And when I say they fight, I mean they fight. I’ve seen bloodshed between the two of them over this bathroom mayhem. It’s not very pretty. And it’s been getting worse.
“Shut up! Both of you!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. They were silent. “Thank you.” I could hear myself think for only second before they started again. “Nick! I have to get in there.”
“And I was in here first. You have to wait like I had to wait yesterday.” I walked up stairs so I wouldn’t have to hear them fight any more. I still needed to pick up Nicole, my girlfriend, and take her to work before I headed off to work. It was already seven thirty-five, and I was supposed to have picked her up five minutes ago. I grabbed my wallet and keys, and ran out the door, hearing Bethany and Nick still fighting in the background. I slammed the front door and headed to my work truck. I pulled up in Nicole’s driveway, thinking that she’d be waiting in her house, but she was standing at the street waiting for me.
“Running a bit late this morning?” Nicole asked rhetorically.
“Just a bit.” I said knowing she wasn’t looking for an answer. “Why do Fridays have to be so damn messed up?”
     “What’s wrong, baby?”
I tore out of the driveway before answering. “They just start out like Mondays. That’s all.”
She leaned over and kissed my cheek. “It only goes up from here.” she whispered in my ear. Tonight is that big party for Dan.”
“And what's in it for me?” I said with a wink, as I pulled up in front of the school.
“Well.” She said as if to be shocked. “Won’t we just have to see?” she said opening the door to get out.
“That we will.” I leaned over and gave her a kiss before she jumped out.
     “Love you.”
     “Love you more, baby.”
I couldn’t stop thinking about five o’clock. It was the Friday curse. Time always seem to move backwards on Fridays. This Friday was no exception. Three consults, twenty interruptions, and an extra fifteen minutes on a thirty minute lunch break later; I was ready to get out of there and off to my weekend. But it was only two. The next three hours seemed only slower then the first five and a half. But finally, five o’clock came, and I was out of there faster then I think I’ve ever been.
I turned on my cell phone as soon as I left the building.
“Hey baby.” Nicole answered knowing it was me.
“Hey. I just left work. I’ll be by in about twenty minutes.”
“Alright. I just need to get a quick shower. So if I don’t answer, just come in and I’ll be out in a few minutes.”
“Ok.” I answered. “I love you, baby.”
     “Love you, too.”
     “Bye.”
     “Bye.”
I got home, changed out of my khakis and dress shirt, and into my blue jeans and a t-shirt. Then I jumped into my Chevy Silverado 4x4. This baby has a six inch body lift, plus a twelve inch suspension lift. She sits on thirty-seven inch tires, and the reputation of never getting stuck, and pulling even the biggest trucks out of the deepest mud holes. I drove that baby 75 miles an hour to Nicole's house.
She was standing out just in front of the steps, talking to her mom, so I pulled up away from the house. I ran up behind her, picked her up and spun her around.
     "Hey!" she screamed.
I just laughed. "Did I scare you?" I asked as I put her down and spun her around to face me.
"Yes!" She punched my arm. I just continued to laugh.
"Where are you guys off to?" her mom asked.
"Probably a movie, then dinner." I spoke up.
"I'll call you and let you know whats going on for tonight, mom."
"Good enough. Just don't get in too much trouble."
"We will!" I said as I took Nicole's hand and we headed for the truck.
"So?" she asked as we left the driveway. "What are we really doing tonight?"
"You don't want to see a movie and go out for dinner?" I asked with a smile.
     "Is that a rhetorical question?"
"Do you want it to be?" I again answered her question with a question.
     "Yes?"
"Ok. Then, yes. It was." We both just laughed. "Actually. I was gonna leave it up to you."
"Well..." she started. "I was thinking about making this newly washed truck dirty."
"Who said it was washed?" I asked sarcastically.
"Its blue, not brown. That means it was washed."
     "Ok. You win."
We drove off to the Dennisville pit, where I knew there would be a party going on. When we got there, everything was as I thought. A big bonfire was blazing away at the far end. There were about thirty or forty pickups and SUVs scattered throughout the pit. Almost every truck had a cooler or a keg. I pulled my truck up to a group of trucks.
     "Yo Mike!"
     "Whats up, Son?"
"Not much? How 'bout you, Son?"
"Just gettin' my drink on on a Friday night!"
Mike and I went to high school together. And every Friday night he was out here. Well. Almost every Friday night. Every once in a wile the cops showed up. And I've even been on the inside of a cell looking out. Back when it was, and still is, illegal to consume alcohol at the age of 17. But that was years ago.
"Damn! Shes new!" I could see Mike had been drinking for a wile. "Where'd you find her?" Mike asked referring to Nicole.
"Shes not new. Just more beautiful then before!"
"Well then! Ya gotta let me borrow that for a night or two!"
     I just walked away laughing.

Nicole found a few of her friends, and I went back to my truck to grab something to drink. Then I walked over and wrapped my arms around her. We were talking for about an hour when Nicole got a weird look in her eyes.
     "You ok, Baby?"
     "We've gotta get going."
"Why? Whats up?" one of her friends asked.
"I don't feel right. Somethings going down. I can feel it. You guys better get outta here, too."
Nicole and I ran over and jumped in my truck. "Head out the back way." she said holding her head.
     "You ok, Baby?"
     "Yea. I've got a headache."
As we headed out the back, trailing Nicole's friends, I saw the reds and blues flashing in my rear view, coming into the pit. I got out of there as fast as I could, taking some of the trails to the main road.
I looked at Nicole. "I told you something was gonna happen."
"I know. That's why we got outta there as fast as we did." I reassured.
"But it was fun!" We both laughed. "Where are we off to now?" she asked.
"How 'bout somewhere I've never taken anyone, ever."
     "Oh?" she wondered out loud.
"Its a place my parents own and never use any more."

I flew around the corner to the Dennisville Lake. On the north side, I pulled off onto a dirt road, to a lake-front property. The white moon shown on the water, lighting up the front of the log cabin. I shut off the truck, and walked around to help Nicole out. She slid into my arms, and I carried her to the back of the truck, where she dropped the tailgate and slid up on it.
I grabbed her arms before she could slide to the back. "I love you, baby."
"I love you, too." I pulled her in and gave her a kiss.

We sat in the bed of my truck that cool night, for what seemed to be hours. The moon was high, still shining across the water, lighting up the waterfront. Nicole and I walked north along the water, holding hands, and just looking into each others eyes. We didn't even make it half way back to the truck before our passions got the best of us. We made love right on the beach.
About eleven thirty, I called her mom, to let her know that Nicole was asleep, and that she was going to be spending the night. I then picked her up, walked into the cabin, and laid her in the bed. I laid there next to her, just watching her sleep. I couldn't help but to think to myself, "Damn! Shes the most beautiful girl in the whole world!"
